Her Story

About Karena

During COVID, I lost my job from getting COVID, and I was at a time where I wanted to find myself. I knew I loved computers at an early age, but it really wasn't fostered towards little girls in the 80s and 90s - it was more pushed towards boys when I was growing up. So I decided to go back to college for that, where I met my mentor, William Mosby. I thought, you know, I want to give back to my community, I want to work in IT, and I came from a bad background, so I wanted to work with kids that also came from a bad background and show them that you don't have to stay in that situation. With my mentor's help, he kind of guided me into teaching. Now that's what I do - I teach and create lesson plans and really get to connect with my community. I work with different schools and rec centers and homeless shelters, and that's how I really found my love for teaching. As Lead Engagement at Street Sense, I go out and network and set up engagements at schools and rec centers, lead classes teaching our curriculum, and I've been promoted to writing curriculum for our company. My end goal is to eventually be a partner at Street Sense and to keep giving back.

01What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I've ever received is to always be playing chess instead of checkers. You know, in chess, you have to think about your moves way ahead of time before you make them. You can't just do it fast. You always have to have Plan B locked in your head.
