About Karina

Karina Helgeson brings more than 11 years of professional experience to her role in higher education advancement. She has spent the last five years at San Diego State, where she focuses on fundraising for the institution. Her career path began in mental health counseling, where she worked as a counselor, coach, and trainer before transitioning into fundraising through a mentor's encouragement. Karina earned her bachelor's degree after starting the program five years ago and completing it in two and a half years. She then pursued and finished her master's degree in December and is now beginning a second program. She values a strong work ethic, showing up authentically, and uplifting women to achieve financial autonomy.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Find a mentor or connect with individuals in fundraising. Don't be scared, know that you belong and will learn along the way. All of us learned along the way. Build confidence, find someone who will cheerlead you.

02What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Strong work ethic from immigrant parents. Showing up as your most authentic self. Encouraging and uplifting women to be financially autonomous.
