Karina Gabriela Powers
Karina Powers is the Director and Founder of Compañía De Danza Folklórica Regional Mexicana, based in Millbrook, New York. She holds a Master’s degree in Mexican Folklore Dance from Escuela de la Danza in Baja California, Mexico, and began her career performing at the Instituto del Seguro Social in Mexicali. Early in her artistic journey, Karina co-founded the Polyphonic Choir University as a professional soprano dramatic singer and later expanded her repertoire as a professional vernacular music singer in California. Her passion for preserving and sharing Mexican cultural heritage led her to establish a folkloric dance company dedicated to teaching, performing, and promoting the rich traditions of Mexican dance.
In California, Karina served as a Dance Director and Artistic Director in various educational programs, including Salinas Adult School, the Salinas City School District, and the Polyphonic Choir for the Migrant Education Even Star program. Through these roles, she developed expertise in choreography, cultural instruction, and community engagement, working with students of all ages to foster artistic, physical, and emotional growth. Her leadership emphasizes inclusivity, teamwork, and the holistic benefits of dance, helping participants build confidence, coordination, and an appreciation for multiculturalism.
Today, Karina continues to share her extensive experience in Mexican folklore with the broader New York community. Her company offers classes, workshops, performances, and cultural events that celebrate Mexico’s diverse dance traditions, encouraging participation regardless of background. Across her five-decade career, Karina has remained committed to preserving cultural heritage, promoting understanding and pride in Mexican traditions, and inspiring new generations to engage with the arts with respect, joy, and dedication.

What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to the creativity and discipline instilled in me growing up in Baja California by my single mother. She encouraged me to pursue my passion for dance, which became a lifelong vocation. Earning my Bachelor’s Degree in Dance further allowed me to grow as a performer and establish myself as a leader within the performing arts community.
What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values most important to me in both my work and personal life are artistic excellence, community connection, and meaningful contribution. Beyond the studio, I enjoy watching movies, taking long walks, and spending time with animals. I strive to bring these values into everything I do, whether it’s through my work in dance, building relationships, or contributing to cultural and community initiatives.
