Q

What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to sheer drive and determination. You can't own your own business without either one. It takes both of those qualities to make it work. I also couldn' have done it without the support of my loved ones; having a support system is extremely important.

Q

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I've ever received is to develop a thick skin and don't lose who you are. This business is really hard, and it can really tear you down. As long as you don't lose that moral compass, what makes you who you are, and develop a thick skin, because sometimes you're gonna get a lot of no's, those two things will carry you really far.

Q

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering this field is to be patient and give yourself grace. It's a huge learning curve, and you need to do it because you love it. Even after 22 years in this field, there's still a lot to learn. You need to be open to continuing education, always going to home shows, getting additional certifications, and attending things like High Point Market, Atlanta Market, Vegas Market, KBIS - anything like that you can participate in just to make you a holistic and well-rounded designer. I think that's very beneficial.

Q

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge in my field is that people underestimate the value of my service. They think interior design is just picking colors, and it's really science and math. It's problem solving, it's figuring out how to make the space function and meet my clients needs aesthetically. I think the constant education to the general public about what the value really is remains a key challenge.

As far as opportunities, there are so many available to designers these days. We can pivot to various areas of focus in the industry so there's always room for growth.

Q

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values most important to me in my work and personal life are ethics - being honest and having integrity. These values translate through both business and personal life. I am a person of my word and I take that very seriously.
