Her Interview

Ten minutes with Kate

01What do you attribute your success to?

My success comes from my mother and God. My mother always reminded me that I am stronger than I think and have a natural tendency to love and nurture people. She was my biggest cheerleader and taught me to use my strength and compassion to guide me. God provides the spiritual foundation that keeps me grounded on tough days.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I received was don't be complacent and don't be afraid to learn new things. Complacency can sneak up on you, and it's important to make your own experiences and test yourself in new situations. My leader encouraged me to move to a different unit when I had been in one role too long, and it turned out to be the best decision.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Stay true to your core values and do not lose yourself. Remember your passion and your why. There will always be external barriers, but if you hold onto your values, passion, and purpose, everything you do will be successful and meaningful. Those soft skills can't be trained and will guide you through challenges.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Healthcare is challenging itself right now. The industry sometimes forgets why we got into it, with external obstacles like premiums and supporting novice nurses post-COVID. The challenge is helping nurses not lose their compassion and passion amid changes, while seeing the bigger picture that this is just a season and we can still do great things for patients and community.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Integrity is number one - always doing the right thing and speaking the truth, which helps you sleep at night and drives good faith actions. Respect for people and yourself is essential, as without it you cannot maintain integrity. Love is the biggest thing - love people and yourself, stay true to yourself, and you will glow and attract others naturally.
