Her Story
About Kate
Kate Kase is the founder of PerfectBound Publishing, LLC, a publishing company she launched in 2025 after retiring from a nearly four-decade career in information technology, including 24 years of federal service that culminated in her role as Director of IT Strategy at the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Rural Development office. Holding a master's degree in communications from Central Michigan University and a bachelor's degree in speech communication from PennWest Clarion, she has long been drawn to the challenge of translating dense, technical material into language that ordinary readers can grasp. That instinct, honed over years of guiding federal IT governance, portfolio management, and strategic communications, now shapes the mission behind her publishing house.
Before starting PerfectBound, Kase built an extensive track record leading IT governance and program management functions across federal agencies, including the U.S. Geological Survey and Emagine IT, where she oversaw multimillion-dollar investment portfolios, built cross-sector partnerships, and led enterprise architecture and capital planning efforts. She holds certifications as a Project Management Professional, Certified Scrum Master, and Certified TBM Executive, credentials that reflect her disciplined approach to project execution and strategic planning throughout her career in public and private sector technology management.
Through PerfectBound Publishing, Kase has released five books that distill complicated subjects, ranging from foundational historical documents to the realities of aging and the workings of modern AI platforms, into approachable, jargon-free reading. Her current focus centers on advancing AI literacy so people can engage with emerging technology without apprehension, a mission she pursues alongside her involvement with the Entrepreneista League and the Business Women's Network of Howard County, Maryland. She has been recognized as one of Maryland's Influential Women for 2026, and she credits her steady, hands-on persistence, showing up daily to write, promote, and connect with others, as the foundation of her success.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Kate
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to persistence. I'm at my computer every day, either writing or promoting my work, and I make it a priority to get out and talk to people as much as possible.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best advice I've ever received is that it's a marathon, not a sprint.
03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
AI is one of the most important and, at times, controversial topics in my field, and I see a real opportunity to help people move past their fear of it by promoting genuine AI literacy so they can use these tools with confidence. At the same time, one of the practical challenges I navigate is distinguishing legitimate promotional opportunities from scams in an increasingly noisy book-marketing landscape.
04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Clarity and persistence guide everything I do professionally, while personally I've reached a point where I prioritize the things that matter to me, like swimming. When I bought my house about seven years ago, I told my realtor that this phase of my life is all about me, and not to show me anything without a pool.
