Her Story

About Kate

I became a national spokesperson for romance scams after experiencing a devastating scam myself four years ago. I lost all my money, my home burned to the ground, and I lost my 6 dogs in that fire. Despite these tremendous losses, I picked myself up and moved forward with a mission to help others. Now I travel the country speaking to anyone who will listen about romance scams and how these criminals operate. My work has taken me to speak at the White House with the President, at the FTC, at the Department of Aging, and I've addressed the UN and the World Health Organization. I've been featured on numerous television shows. As a presenter, speaker, and keynote speaker, I handle a variety of activities each day, from preparing slides for presentations to speaking with people who have been involved in scams, to working with government officials to help them understand what's going on with scams. I speak to audiences ranging from 5 people to 500 people without hesitation or nervousness. What makes me influential now is the fact that I'm out speaking across the country about scams at the highest levels of government and international organizations.

Ten minutes with Kate

01What do you attribute your success to?

I feel like I was asked to go through this - to lose all my money, lose my home, lose everything, and be able to go out and tell this story to other people. I've been given the stamina and the grace to get out there and get up on a stage, whether it's 5 people or 500 people, and speak without being nervous, without hesitation. I feel like this is what was laid out for me to do at this part of my life.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

To do the best you can, and you can sleep easily at night knowing that you've done that.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge is that scammers are far better at what they are doing than we are about learning about it. We're not winning this war on scams by any means.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Certainly honesty, but kindness. It doesn't cost anything to be kind to someone. And you're never expected to pay back a kindness, you're only expected to pay it forward.
