Her Story
About Kathleen
I've been in the aerospace and aviation industry for 26 years, starting my career through the military. I've worked in all different aspects of aerospace and aviation, including positions at Lockheed Martin, as a government employee, and at American Airlines. I'm currently an aerospace developer, a position I've held for about 8 months. In my role, I develop products for aircraft, and our biggest clients are the military right now. My greatest professional achievement to date has been influencing others to succeed. I hold an undergraduate degree from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and I'm finishing up my Master's degree at the University of Arizona this spring.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Kathleen
01What do you attribute your success to?
I think having family support and having a good mentor to help you along the way has been really important to my success. Those two things have made a significant difference in my career journey.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Growth isn't linear. That's always been good advice for me to remember throughout my career.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I would say growth isn't linear. Focus on your goal, and it's okay that you might have some setbacks, because it's not always gonna go forward. Just never stop, just kind of continue, and remember that you're in control of your life. Don't compare to anyone else's.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
I think the challenges would be the education - not everyone knows of these opportunities. I think it's not always advertised, especially to women. The whole aerospace and aviation culture is unique, and there should be more word of mouth about it. It's a unique field that needs better visibility and awareness, particularly for women who might not know these opportunities exist.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
I'm definitely faith-based, Christian faith-based. Integrity is also very important to me - being honest in everything I do. These values guide both my work and personal life.
