Her Interview
Ten minutes with Kathleen
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to perseverance. It's never occurred to me that I wouldn't succeed. But it also gets back to my belief in relationship - we're all connected. I believe in service, and what you give comes back. That's been a guiding principle throughout my career and life.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I've received is to know thyself first, because everything else falls from that. You can't play someone else's game and expect to win - you've got to be authentic and follow your own journey. Don't compare yourself to other people. Brutal honesty with self is the hardest thing to master, but if you master that, then you can have the real conversations that you have to have in the workplace and in your personal life. Ask the hard questions. Is this true? Is this true, really? Is this the wise thing to do? Why am I choosing this? Why am I choosing this, really? And remember, everyone puts their pants on one leg at a time - we're all human. Speak spirit to spirit.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Ask the hard questions, stay curious, and find a mentor who will challenge, guide, and advocate for your growth.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
In my new role at Lexitas, I'm excited about the opportunity to learn a new therapeutic area and make a difference by changing the way people see the world. I love the culture and strong leadership there, and I'm passionate about demonstrating that organizations with people-centered cultures thrive. In terms of public service, it's extraordinarily challenging right now. Pending legislation in the North Carolina General Assembly could potentially upend how municipalities deliver services, and the federal implosion has direct impact at local government. Local government is where policy is our people - it's not statistics, it's your neighbors, your friends, the people in the grocery store. It's where the rubber hits the road. It's the government services of first level and last resort. Navigating that continues to get harder and harder, though we're very fortunate in Hillsborough to have a high-functioning government and supportive community that values civility.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values most important to me are authenticity, radical empathy, and radical truth. I believe we're all connected, and I'm committed to service for the common good. My mantra is 'Love one another as I have loved you' - and that has no exceptions, no conditions. These values guide everything I do in both my work and personal life.
