About Kathleen

Kathleen Johnson is a respected executive board member and aviation industry veteran with 35 years of distinguished experience at American Airlines and Sabre Holdings, Inc. where she held eleven (11) progressively responsible positions across customer service, airport operations, sales, product marketing, project management, and corporate leadership. Throughout her career, she developed a reputation for strategic leadership, operational excellence, and the ability to successfully manage complex, cross-functional initiatives. Her diverse experience provided her with a comprehensive understanding of the aviation industry, allowing her to lead teams, improve processes, and deliver solutions that positively impacted employees, customers, and the organization. One of Kathleen’s most notable accomplishments was leading the development of the American Airlines AAdvantage® Electronic Upgrade Program, a high-profile initiative championed by former President and CEO Robert Crandall. Despite not having a traditional technology background, Kathleen successfully embraced the challenge by leveraging her strengths in communication, organization, collaboration, and project management. She coordinated efforts across multiple departments and created the project requirements that served as the foundation for the program’s successful implementation. Completed within a year, the initiative became a significant achievement for American Airlines and reflected Kathleen’s ability to adapt, innovate, and lead complex projects with exceptional results. Following her retirement from American Airlines, Kathleen continued her commitment to service as President of AMRRC, Inc. (American Airlines Retirees’ Committee), a 501(c)(4) not-for-profit organization dedicated to supporting and advocating for retired American Airlines employees. Under her leadership, AMRRC has grown into a trusted resource providing retirees with guidance on benefits, travel privileges, insurance, legislative matters, and retirement-related concerns through newsletters, digital communications, and personalized support. Kathleen attributes her success to continuous learning, embracing new opportunities, and leading with trust and empathy. Her passion for helping others and her dedication to building meaningful connections continue to guide her work as she supports the American Airlines retiree community and preserves the legacy of the organization she served for decades.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Kathleen

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to a commitment to continuous learning, a willingness to embrace new challenges, and a genuine passion for serving others. Throughout my career with American Airlines, I had the opportunity to grow across operations, customer service, sales and marketing, and project management, which gave me a broad perspective and the confidence to lead in complex environments. One of my proudest accomplishments was leading the development of the American Airlines AAdvantage Electronic Upgrade Program, where I discovered that determination, collaboration, and strong organizational skills can overcome even the steepest learning curves. Equally meaningful to me has been the recognition I received from customers whose lives I positively impacted through compassionate service during my tenure in airport operations. Today, as President of the American Airlines Retirees Committee (AMRRC), Inc., I continue to measure success by my ability to help others, provide guidance, and build meaningful connections. I believe true success is not defined solely by professional achievements, but by the positive difference we make in the lives of the people we serve.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I have ever received is to lead with integrity, stay connected to the people around you, and never underestimate the value of supporting others. Throughout my career, I have been inspired by leaders who understood that true success comes from empowering people and creating an environment where individuals feel valued. One leader who had a significant impact on me was Robert Crandall, former President and CEO of American Airlines. I admired his ability to connect with employees at every level, listen to their perspectives, and demonstrate that every person’s contribution mattered. His leadership showed me that effective leaders are approachable, communicate openly, and remain engaged with the people they serve. I have carried those lessons throughout my own career by encouraging others, recognizing potential, and creating opportunities for growth. Ultimately, I believe the greatest leaders are those who lead with purpose, respect, and a genuine commitment to making a positive difference in the lives of others.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering the industry is to remain curious, embrace opportunities to learn, and never underestimate their own abilities. Throughout my career, I have learned that growth comes from continuously seeking knowledge, accepting new challenges, and being willing to step outside of my comfort zone. I encourage women to explore different areas of an organization, learn from every experience, and build a broad understanding of the your customers. Companies should also focus on, recognize and invest in the talent they already have, as employees who understand the organization’s culture, and its customers. Some achievements may come from opportunities that initially feel overwhelming, but with determination, adaptability, and a willingness to learn, those challenges can become the defining moments in your career. Believe in yourself, pursue opportunities for growth, and remember that your unique experiences and perspective are valuable assets to your company.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest opportunities come from organizations recognizing and developing the talent they already have within their workforce. Throughout my career with American Airlines, I learned that growth is often created by being curious, embracing new challenges, and remaining open to opportunities that allow you to expand your skills. Large organizations provide tremendous opportunities for employees, including women, to advance into leadership roles when they are given the chance to contribute in new ways. My own career journey was shaped by taking on diverse responsibilities across airport operations, customer service, sales and marketing, headquarters initiatives, and project management, which allowed me to gain an in-depth understanding of the business and industry. By continuing to learn, adapting to change, and trusting in our abilities, we can create meaningful contributions for our organizations and the customers we serve.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that are most important to me in both my work and personal life are trust and empathy. I believe trust is the foundation of any successful relationship, team, or organization. When people trust one another, they feel respected, supported, and empowered to contribute their best. Equally important is empathy—the ability to listen, understand, and recognize what others may be experiencing. Throughout my career, I have learned that leadership is not only about achieving goals but also about supporting people through challenges. Whether serving employees, customers, or retirees through AMRRC, I have always focused on building meaningful connections, understanding different perspectives, and helping others. Trust and empathy continue to guide me in the way I serve others in every aspect of my life.
