Kathleen Skinner is an aspiring addiction counselor and psychology student at Purdue Global, where she is pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology with a major in Addiction, expected to graduate in 2027. Her dedication to the field is deeply personal, shaped by her own experiences overcoming addiction and transforming her life after incarceration. Kathleen’s journey has given her a unique perspective and empathy, which she brings to her work supporting individuals seeking recovery and a second chance.
Before entering the field of mental health, Kathleen built over 15 years of experience in customer service and hospitality, serving in roles such as front desk agent and other client-facing positions. This background equipped her with strong communication, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills, which she now applies in a clinical context. Kathleen’s professional focus emphasizes helping even one person make a meaningful change, reflecting her belief that every interaction can contribute to someone’s growth and recovery.
Despite facing significant personal and health challenges, including strokes and a heart attack that led to a PTSD diagnosis, Kathleen has demonstrated resilience and determination. She continues to advance her education while working with a mental health counselor to meet the supervised hours and licensing requirements needed to become a certified addiction counselor in Washington State. Her commitment to transformation, both personal and professional, underscores her mission to guide and empower others toward healing, growth, and long-term recovery.

What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to the pivotal experiences that transformed my life, including going to prison, which forced me to confront my past and change. The support and guidance of my mental health counselor and my decision to return to school have been critical in helping me stay focused, resilient, and committed to my goals.
What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The most important values to me are making a difference and helping others, even if I can impact just one person. My work and life are guided by empathy, dedication, and the belief that everyone deserves a second chance.
