About Kathleen
Kathleen Weinzinger is the Executive Assistant to the Vice Provost for Global Affairs at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona. She has held this position for 10.5 years and specializes in international education. Her career path began as a stay-at-home mom, followed by six years as a substitute teacher and then as an office manager at an elementary school before joining the university. Her degree in cultural anthropology, studies in Chinese, German, and Spanish, and a year living in China align with her love of culture and languages, making the role an ideal fit that combines her executive support experience with her passion for international education. Kathleen attributes her success to the professional women who serve as her advisors, cheerleaders, and friends, as well as supportive department leadership that provides professional development opportunities, her family's encouragement, and her own personal integrity and hard work. She takes pride in her reputation as a hard worker and finds deep satisfaction in bringing the world to the university's doorstep. She advises young professionals to pursue certifications, trainings, and workshops in areas such as project management and office technology, and to attend forums for executive assistants to develop pride in the role and learn to serve as strategic partners. 01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to the people who surround me - professional women advisors, cheerleaders, friends, and supportive department leadership that creates professional development opportunities. My family has always been supportive of my professional growth. I also hope my personal integrity and hard work have played a role. I take pride in doing my job well and have a reputation as a hard worker. The satisfaction comes from bringing the world to our doorstep in international education.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Find professional development opportunities like certifications, trainings, or workshops in project management or office technology. Attend forums for executive assistants to gain pride in the role and learn to be a strategic partner. Keep learning about office performance and the industry.
