Ten minutes with Kathryn

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to a combination of perseverance, continuous learning, and a strong support network. I’ve always believed in showing up fully—putting in the work, staying adaptable, and embracing challenges as opportunities to grow. I’ve also had mentors and colleagues who have encouraged me, challenged my thinking, and helped me navigate pivotal moments in my career. Most importantly, I stay grounded in my values and lead with integrity, collaboration, and a genuine desire to uplift others.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I’ve ever received is to fail boldly and learn quickly. I was taught early on that progress isn’t about avoiding mistakes—it’s about using them as fuel. Every setback has strengthened my resilience, sharpened my judgment, and expanded my perspective. That mindset has allowed me to take on new challenges with confidence, stay curious, and continuously refine my approach. Embracing growth over perfection has been one of the most transformative lessons in my career.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering the hospitality industry is to actively seek out mentors who can help you navigate the fast-paced, people‑centric nature of this field. Strong mentors—both women and men—can offer perspective, help you build confidence, and open doors that might otherwise remain unseen.

I’d also encourage you to take bold, strategic risks. Hospitality rewards those who step forward, raise their hand, and embrace new responsibilities even before they feel completely ready. Some of the most pivotal moments in my career came from saying yes to opportunities that pushed me to grow.

Above all, lead with authenticity, empathy, and professionalism. This industry thrives on genuine human connection, and your ability to create meaningful experiences—whether for guests, teams, or partners—will set you apart. Trust your voice, believe in your value, and don’t be afraid to take up space.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges in hospitality today is balancing rising guest expectations with the realities of a rapidly changing workforce. Guests want highly personalized, seamless experiences, while teams are adapting to staffing shortages, evolving technologies, and new service models. This creates pressure—but also tremendous opportunity—for leaders who can innovate and empower their teams.

Technology transformation is another defining force. From AI‑driven guest services to automated operations, the industry is evolving quickly. The opportunity lies in using technology not to replace the human touch, but to elevate it—allowing teams to spend more time creating meaningful, memorable experiences.

Lastly, hospitality continues to face challenges around sustainability and community impact. But this is also where the industry has the chance to lead. Guests increasingly choose brands that operate responsibly, invest in people, and contribute positively to their communities. Organizations that embrace this mindset are setting themselves apart—and shaping the future of the field.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that guide me—both professionally and personally—are integrity, empathy, and continuous growth. Integrity is the foundation of how I work: doing what’s right, being accountable, and showing up consistently for my team, our guests, and myself. In hospitality, trust is everything, and I believe that begins with leading by example.

Empathy is equally important. This industry is built on human connection, and I’ve learned that listening well, respecting different perspectives, and creating a supportive environment can transform both guest experiences and team culture. Empathy helps me lead with compassion and make decisions that elevate people, not just processes.

Finally, I value growth—staying curious, taking risks, and embracing opportunities to learn. Whether it’s developing new skills, stepping outside my comfort zone, or encouraging others to do the same, I believe growth fuels innovation and resilience. It keeps me grounded, forward‑thinking, and committed to evolving in meaningful ways.
