Her Story
About Kathryn
Kathryn Darden began her career in publishing and journalism in the mid-1980s, writing articles for local publications such as the Tennessean, the Banner, the Review Appeal, and the Brentwood Journal. Her degree is a bachelor's in English education from Lipscomb University.
Inspired by her father, she attributes her success to persistence, integrity, and the advice to never say cannot and always try.
In the mid-1990s, she founded Women in Christian Music, an organization that held monthly meetings and aimed to elevate women in the Christian music. The group met for almost five years before moving to the web.
Darden operates one of the longest-running publications dedicated to the Christian music scene on the web. She has received recognition including selection into Marquis Who's Who in 2026, Influential Women 2026, poetry awards, sales awards, and Civitan club awards. She is a past member of the Gospel Music Association.
Among the biggest challenges in her field, she notes the impact of AI on content creation, plummeting readership, and shorter attention spans that favor quick fixes over in-depth articles.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Kathryn
01What do you attribute your success to?
My father encouraged my writing and taught me the basic steps on reaching out to publications with a press release or article.
His life advice was don't say can't, always try. From him I learned persistence, integrity, and not giving up.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
I think that came from my father who taught me don't say can't, and always try. That's the business advice I have followed ever since I got into the business world. Work hard. Try to find a solution.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Be true to yourself. Work harder than your peers. Don’t expect things to be handed to you; learn to work for them. Never give up. Try. Innovate.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The biggest challenge is AI doing everything these days. Readership has plummeted as Google AI algorithms changed. People have quicker attention spans and want quick fixes instead of in-depth articles. Anyone depending on print readership has struggled.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
My Christian faith. Persistence, integrity, not giving up, and always trying.
