Her Interview

Ten minutes with Kathy

01What do you attribute your success to?

I just have this innate drive to make a change and find my purpose. I'm just a very hard worker who kept going, and I've had a great support system of mentors encouraging me along the way.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

My mentor Sterlon White, who supervised my nonprofit, encouraged me by saying 'Kathy, you know this stuff, go get your credentials' for chemical dependency and then mental health, pushing me to pursue my licenses and degrees.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

We can do hard things scared. We can do hard things even when it feels scary, and sometimes we need to be reminded of that by mentors.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Resource access for clients who need services and complications with insurance companies, which is why I operate on a private pay basis. Also, clients sometimes realize they're not ready for the hard work counseling requires.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Being your authentic self and owning your truth with kindness and respect. Showing compassion and self-compassion, and giving yourself the same grace you would give to others you care about.
