Her Story
About Kathy
My career has taken an unconventional path that I never anticipated but has served me incredibly well. I started off as a developer in IT long ago, but quickly realized that object-oriented programming was not for me and not how my brain worked. I stayed within IT for a number of years in the retail space, working with brands like Applebee's and IHOP, owning consumer-facing technologies. I then transitioned into chief digital officer roles that blended technology and marketing, including all paid media, multi-funnel marketing tactics, email, and digital properties like websites and e-commerce sites. This interesting blend of technology and marketing served me really well, as so much of marketing nowadays has a huge MarTech component, and it's super important to understand technology as a strategic enabler as well as all the analytics that come with it. I found that I loved digital marketing because it presented an interesting problem to solve around customer acquisition and retention, and how to find those segments or personas that you can talk to and market to in the ways that they're interested in. I've been fortunate to work across the gamut of retailers, both big and small, public and private, including H&R Block, Helzberg Diamonds, and Victorian Trading Company, where we were super small, super entrepreneurial, and super agile, and I loved that we moved really fast. Before joining 1-800-GOT-JUNK, I was with TVH, which sold aftermarket parts for forklifts and tractors. What was really interesting about their core problem was their e-commerce site included 60 million SKUs, far and away the largest I had ever supported from both the technology and business product side, and 95% of the company's revenue came through that e-commerce site. Now I'm with 1-800-GOT-JUNK as Senior Vice President of Product, where I'm charged as a transformational leader to transform the home services space to be more customer-obsessed, bringing new products and offerings to life for both B2C and B2B customers with a team mantra to move fast, learn even faster, and always be customer-obsessed.

01What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
I find that I am happiest in environments where we can be highly entrepreneurial, highly agile, and truly customer-obsessed and customer-centric with a growth mindset. I don't have a specific industry that I'm married to necessarily, as long as I can be in a position with a company where we have the empowerment and the latitude to truly undergo a transformation, whether that be digital or overall business. That's where I shine, I feel, and that's where I would want to be. I also highly value celebrating women that are in the industry and in the space, and I see it as an opportunity to help women branch into industries that maybe aren't something they thought of as an opportunity.
