Kathy Wiebe is a highly experienced technical entertainment and production professional with a career spanning over three decades. She currently works as an L1 at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, contributing across multiple roles including stage management and lighting design. In addition, she supports Opera Orlando as an electrics assistant and works with the City of Orlando at Lake Eola Amphitheather as a lighting programmer/ LD showcasing her versatility and commitment to live performance quality. Kathy’s career began somewhat serendipitously through a personal connection, which led to her first roles at SeaWorld. She quickly established herself in technical theatre and production management, co-owning an architectural and theatrical dimming and control business and serving as a Technical Director for Montverde Academy, where she created a conservatory technical track that helped students gain admission to top-tier technical theatre programs. Her work has spanned theme parks, cruise ship new builds with Norwegian Cruise Lines, and regional theatres, including Orlando Shakes and the University of Central Florida, demonstrating her expertise across diverse live performance environments. Known for her adaptability, technical skill, and mentorship, Kathy emphasizes continuous learning and encourages more women to enter technical theatre. She is recognized for her ability to seamlessly manage multiple aspects of production, from lighting design and programming to stage management, production and technical operations. Kathy combines hands-on experience with a passion for education and innovation, making her a respected figure in technical entertainment and live production management.

What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to showing up and actively listening and reminding myself that everyday is a learning day. I surround myself with a few close women in my life who lift me up when I start to dought myself and abilities that is still a perdominatly male based industry.

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best advice Kathy has embraced is never to take yourself to seriously and always find time to laugh.

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Ask a thousand questions, because no question is ever wrong. Find somebody to mentor you. Show up on time. Learn everything that you can, because the more you know in our business, the more you will work. Surround yourself with women who support and lift you.

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenges for people of my age is to continue to work in the industry. Companies are hiring younger and cheaper

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The most important value for me in my work is always showing up on time, never asking someone to something that you would not do yourself, being honest and take accountablity for your actions. The most important values in my personal life is be yourself and be proud of every wrinkle you have because you have earned it.
