About Katie

Katie Coleman serves as a Sonography Educator at one of the local colleges in Nashville, Tennessee, teaching in their Diagnostic Medical Sonography program for a little over two years. She has been a sonographer since the end of 2018 and instructs students in abdomen scanning, small parts exams, and thyroid exams, guiding learners from high school graduates to adult students across varied backgrounds. Coleman attended Volunteer State Community College in Gallatin, Tennessee, for four and a half years completing both x-ray school and ultrasound school, and she is finishing her bachelor's degree in healthcare administration at Casa Loma College in October. She attributes her success to a strong foundation of determination and headstrong tenacity instilled at an early age, along with passion, drive, and dedication to continuous improvement. Coleman has participated in medical mission trips to Kenya twice, with her most recent in March, where she performed ultrasounds during 46 surgeries in four days, and she plans a third trip. As an educator, she focuses on supporting students emotionally and mentally through daily affirmations while balancing academic demands, and she finds great reward in witnessing the moment when concepts click for her students and their confidence grows. She advises young women entering the field to stay humble, lift others up, and approach their work with a servant's attitude.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Katie

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to a strong foundation and being taught at an early age to be very determined and headstrong. When I want something, I go after it with tenacity and passion. Having that passion, drive, and dedication to always be better than you were the day before is a big part of being a sonographer.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Stay humble because everybody starts somewhere and we always have something to learn. Be the person that lifts other people up. Lean into being a servant to others and being there just to help. You will have so many more opportunities and impact so many more people if you go into the field with a servant's attitude.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Challenges include the sheer volume of exams, pressure to be very accurate and precise as the eyes of the doctor, and as an educator the mental load of balancing supporting students emotionally while managing assignments and tests. Opportunities include seeing the light bulb moment when something clicks for a student and watching their progression and confidence grow.
