Her Story

About Katie

Ever since I was very young, I wanted to teach. Right out of college, I became a high school teacher with an interesting combination of Spanish and math. I had about 15 friends with the same major, and quite a few of us did a semester abroad in Madrid, Spain together during college. After some years teaching high school, I took a break and got into administration for an insurance company. Then I decided to go back to education, but changed my focus to elementary ed, where I did some bilingual teaching with my Spanish and also taught math. The education system in Texas is not the best, so I eventually got out of elementary ed. A friend pointed me towards this admin job with Texas A&M, and it's been a really, really good fit. I love it here, and I love my boss and my coworkers. I've been here about 3 years now. What I bring to my role is good attention to detail and a commitment to elevating the experience of people I come across. My background in the classroom helps me think of things others might not, like using two different colors for negotiation case studies so students can keep track of who's arguing which side. I don't know if it's an achievement, but I really try to add a little bit and put my spin on things when I can to make things a little bit more special, or maybe just a little bit better than they might have been otherwise.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I think as women, we still very much need to be helping each other and making a place for the next person, rather than controlling things. In the past, there was only spot for one, perhaps. And I think we're getting to a better time, but everybody who is a professional needs to be reaching up to somebody else for advice or perspective, and also reaching down to help somebody else come up in their role. We need to support each other and create opportunities rather than limiting them.
