Dr. Katie Ely, Ph.D., is a dedicated Professor of Criminal Justice at Commonwealth University of Pennsylvania. With over 15 years of experience in higher education, Dr. Ely has built a reputation for excellence in teaching, mentorship, and academic leadership. She has held multiple leadership roles, including Department Chair and Interim Associate Dean, and has contributed significantly to the development of programs that prepare students for meaningful careers in criminal justice. A passionate advocate for women in criminal justice, Dr. Ely created the Women and Crime course at Commonwealth University, which highlights the roles and experiences of women in the field. Her work addresses an important gap in the traditional male-centered criminal justice curriculum, exploring topics such as female officers, women affected by substance abuse, and crimes against women. Through this course, she connects students with alumnae mentors and professionals who are breaking barriers, inspiring the next generation of leaders to approach criminal justice with purpose and equity. Outside of academia, Dr. Ely is a committed fitness instructor, teaching Zumba and Urbankick classes, reflecting her belief in the importance of holistic well-being. Her combined dedication to education, advocacy, and personal health exemplifies a dynamic approach to both professional and personal growth, making her a respected leader, mentor, and role model within and beyond the criminal justice community
