She recently launched her private practice, A Listening Ear with Dr. K LLC, in December 2025, offering outpatient therapy services tailored for individuals who may be hesitant to begin traditional therapy. Known for her approachable style as "the therapist for those who hate therapists," Dr. McCoog also provides specialized programming for children to help them understand emotions and develop self-soothing skills. Her work emphasizes trauma-informed care, attachment, and emotional development, ensuring that clients of all ages feel supported and empowered.
Dr. McCoog earned her Doctorate in Social Work (DSW) in August 2025, focusing on clinical practice, leadership, and education, following her Master’s in Social Work completed in 2015. She has cultivated expertise in trauma and attachment, professional supervision, and working with higher-acuity populations, bridging gaps in care through innovative, client-centered programs.
Beyond her clinical work, Dr. McCoog is committed to professional development, mentoring aspiring clinicians, and supporting others pursuing terminal degrees or licensure in the mental health field. She is active in professional organizations such as the Association for Children’s Residential and Community Services and the American Psychological Association, and volunteers with local schools and community programs. What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to the incredible support and guidance I’ve received throughout my life, particularly from my mother. Her example of compassion, dedication, and empowerment—both as a nurse and in how she supports others—has deeply shaped my approach to helping clients. I also place a strong emphasis on professional development, continually expanding my skills so I can make a greater impact and train others to do the same. Along the way, the influence of my family and the guidance of key mentors have been invaluable in shaping my growth and achievements.
What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I’ve ever received is to recognize that imposter syndrome can be one of the biggest barriers to growth. Understanding that self-doubt is natural, but shouldn’t hold me back, has empowered me to take on challenges, step into new opportunities, and trust in my abilities.
What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice to young women entering this industry is to never make yourself smaller for someone else. Own your expertise, speak up confidently, and claim the space you deserve—your perspective and contributions are valuable.
What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges in my field right now is the high levels of burnout and turnover. At the same time, this presents an opportunity to create supportive work environments, invest in professional development, and implement strategies that retain talent while fostering growth and resilience.
What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values that guide me in both my work and personal life are trust, humility, and genuine connection. I prioritize building strong relationships and approaching others with understanding, always striving to be authentic and supportive in every interaction.
