Her Story
About Katie
I started in nursing in 2007 after coming to the United States in 2000 from Albania, where I had been a physician. I worked my way up from bedside nurse, ICU nurse, and ER nurse to nursing supervisor and nurse manager for about 7 years. Now as Director of Critical Care, my focus is on patient care, safety, and leading a high-functioning team. I earned my PhD in nursing science by self-teaching English, which was a major achievement. Outside of work, I enjoy gardening for pollinators and wrote a children's book about a hummingbird during COVID.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
As long as you're in it for the right reason and your heart is in it, of course we are going to succeed. We can do anything that we set our mind to, regardless of language. For nursing, you gotta have a lot of heart and compassion. Always think what is best for my patient, the family, and my community.
02What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
I am still new in my role, but where I am, it seems like a pretty well-oiled machine with a very high-functioning and compassionate team.
