Her Story

About Katie

I truly love Visit Phoenix. I love my team, I love who I work with, and really, it's just about what else can I do with this role, with this department, and with this team. There are always endless possibilities with this. We meet with other DMOs, destination marketing organizations all over the country, and we talk and exchange ideas, so I'm always hearing from other cities what they're doing, and I always want to adapt or bring that over to us and see how we can expand our membership, how we can be more ingrained into the community, and really lift up the community. My biggest focus is just more visibility for our businesses in the community. We're all in this together, we're all pulling this together, out for economic growth for the Valley. I work remote, like my position is remote, and everybody else, for the most part of my company, is in an office, so I'm really reliant on communication and being part of the team, and really hearing them and them listening to me, because I have to make that extra effort.

Ten minutes with Katie

01What do you attribute your success to?

I enjoy working. I enjoy being around people, I enjoy being part of teams. As long as you truly can enjoy what you do, you can be successful. You have to really be a team player in order to be successful. You have to get input from others. You have to listen. That's probably the biggest factor of being successful is just listening to your team and really, really hearing them, and then giving your own ideas too, because then maybe they'll listen to you if you listen to them. In life, in personal life and work, it takes the village.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Networking is key, and genuine networking, not just working a room, but really creating a relationship. When you're sitting next to someone, just ask questions and remember their answers, and follow up. That's probably my biggest advice, is just making those connections and following up with them, and really cultivating them and nurturing those relationships, because you never know who you're going to be sitting next to at the next event, or just building a friendship too, having that connection to reach out to. Another thing that I love to do is just tie businesses together so they can collaborate. If you hear about somebody having a business, you can connect them with this person over here. I really do like connecting people, so not just connecting myself, but connecting other people too. So that would be my advice, is just the networking and building relationships, really. Everyone makes mistakes, you want to be human, and so just meeting other people and being yourself, I think that builds a better relationship than just exchanging business cards.
