Katie Salch

Administrator for Mentoring and Community Partnerships
Student Choice High School
Sun City, AZ 85373

Katie Salch is a seasoned educator, administrator, and consultant with 24 years of experience in education dedicated to advancing student success and strengthening educational systems. She currently serves at Student Choice High School in Glendale, Arizona where she supports 10 school sites in the development and implementation of ECAPs (Education and Career Action Plans). In this role she leads and collaborates with a team of 25 professionals across campuses to help students explore postsecondary pathways, set meaningful goals, and take actionable steps toward life after high school. Working within an alternative high school setting, she is deeply committed to breaking down barriers and supporting students who choose to return to school with the goal of earning their diploma.
Katie began her career in education as a classroom teacher, a role she continues to view as the most impactful in the profession. Although she initially planned to major in history, her path shifted after meeting her husband, who was a teacher, inspiring her to pursue education instead. She graduated from Northern Arizona University and entered the classroom, following in the footsteps of her mother, who also transitioned into education after a career in the United States Air Force. Throughout her early career, influential administrators recognized her leadership potential and encouraged her to pursue administrative roles, providing her with opportunities that ultimately shaped her path into educational leadership.
Across her career, Katie has remained focused on creating meaningful learning experiences and fostering student growth, with her most significant accomplishment being the moments when students recognize their own potential and believe in what they can achieve. She holds a Master of Arts in Educational Administration and Supervision from Arizona State University and a Master of Arts in Curriculum and Instruction from Grand Canyon University. She also completed Harvard University’s Educational Management and Business certificate program, which strengthened her ability to connect educational leadership with organizational strategy. Katie is driven by the belief that while schools must be well structured and effectively managed, the heart of education remains the classroom experience and the relationships that inspire students to succeed.

Q

What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to family support and internal motivation. I am the baby of the family, and I've always had family around because I'm the baby - there's always been people around. But you know, sometimes you just gotta pull up your bootstraps and move forward, while always knowing that my family and my support system would be there no matter what decision I made.

Q

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Best career advice I ever received was to just go for it. Sometimes you have to fall up, meaning you have to put yourself out there and be willing to fail in order to "fall up" into an opportunities that you might not have had in the first place.

Q

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering the field of education is to trust your instincts and listen to your inner voice. There will always be many external opinions and expectations, but your sense of purpose and what feels right internally should guide your decisions. Stay grounded in your values, remain open to learning, and do not be afraid to take opportunities that challenge you. Confidence in your own judgment, combined with a commitment to growth and reflection, will help you build a meaningful and impactful career.

Q

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

I think the biggest challenge is just everyone having the same focus of building the best little adults that we can, no matter the politics, no matter the funding, no matter what type of school they go to. How can we recenter and realize that our students are who are going to sign those Medicare checks in the future? How do we want our students to act and be citizens of the world that we want to live in when we retire? That comes down to supporting students through the Foster Care Review Board - students that have just the biggest barriers in the world - to supporting students that are graduating with law degrees but haven't experienced the world. How can we develop our children into adults that are going to continue to have a prosperous future for all of us?

Q

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

My values are acceptance of anybody and everybody, and meeting people where they're at, and finding out what they want, and supporting them to get there. It's not my job to decide where they need to go, it's not my job to judge anything that they do, but it's my job to hear them and move them forward.
