About Katie

Katie Varela is a mechanical engineer, capstone coach, and consultant specializing in compliant mechanisms and innovative product development. She earned both her Bachelor of Engineering and Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Brigham Young University (BYU), where she conducted research in the Compliant Mechanisms Research Lab. Her technical expertise focuses on designing compliant systems that reduce part counts, simplify assemblies, and create compact, efficient products. Through her consulting work, she helps organizations transform complex engineering challenges into practical, innovative design solutions.

Alongside her consulting career, Varela serves as a Capstone Coach at BYU, mentoring senior mechanical engineering students as they complete year-long, industry-sponsored product development projects. Her academic journey also includes roles as a teaching assistant, research assistant, and special events intern, giving her extensive experience in engineering education, research, and student development. She is passionate about helping aspiring engineers build confidence, develop technical expertise, and experience the breakthrough moments that come from mastering complex concepts.

Currently an Associate at Magleby Innovation Consulting, Varela combines engineering innovation with a commitment to mentorship and lifelong learning. She is active in the engineering community through the Society of Women Engineers and has been recognized as a BYU Monson Scholar for academic excellence. Looking ahead, she plans to earn a Ph.D. and become a university professor, continuing to advance the field of compliant mechanisms while inspiring the next generation of engineers.

I attribute my success to God's guidance and the unwavering support of my husband and family. I also believe that being passionate about what you do is key to achieving lasting success.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering this industry is to be confident in your abilities. If you know how to do something well, don't be afraid to share your knowledge and contribute with confidence.
