Her Story
About Katie
Katie has over 20 years of experience in restaurant management, having begun her career at age 15 as a dishwasher at her uncle's restaurant. She later worked as a server at Del Frisco's, where she was promoted into management within her first week, and went on to manage a two-story sushi restaurant with a large staff. She notes that the industry is male-dominated and has become more so, with a shift toward managing numbers and profit margins rather than people, especially following COVID-related changes. She attributes her success to listening and patience, emphasizing the need for calm decision-making in chaotic situations. Her advice to young women entering the field includes learning about industry changes, working locally instead of for big chains or corporations, and having a backup plan such as Lyft or Uber Eats for slow periods.

Ten minutes with Katie
01What do you attribute your success to?
Listening and patience. No matter what you're doing in the restaurant, you have to have a lot of patience.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Learn the changes in the industry. Work local if you can, instead of for a big chain or corporation. Have a backup plan like Lyft or Uber Eats because when the restaurant is slow, you need something else.
