Ten minutes with Katlyn
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to three key drivers: data-informed agility, genuine human connection, and my professional network.
First, while creative storytelling grabs attention, analytics reveal what truly resonates. I closely monitor audience demographics, engagement rates, and content types to understand what moves our audience to act, then pivot our strategy accordingly.
Second, social media is ultimately about community. In an age where AI-generated content is everywhere, providing real value and human authenticity is more crucial than ever.
Finally, I owe so much to 'my village'—current and former colleagues who have supported, taught, and inspired me along the way, each offering unique perspectives, encouragement, and expertise that have shaped my approach to leadership, collaboration, and professional growth. Success in social media is never a solo achievement; it’s built on community both on and off the screen.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I have ever received is that while social media is always on, I do not have to be. Because the digital landscape is always changing, it can be easy to feel pressure to stay constantly connected and responsive. I have learned that establishing clear boundaries between work and personal life is essential to maintaining balance, protecting my energy, and avoiding burnout. Making time to disconnect allows me to return to my work with greater focus and creativity, ultimately supporting sustainable, long-term professional success.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
First and foremost, master the art of listening. Social media is often mistaken for a broadcasting channel, but its true power lies in two-way communication. Listen closely to your audience’s pain points, monitor sentiment, and listen to your cross-functional colleagues. The best insights and strongest campaign strategies come from absorbing what people are actually saying before trying to make yourself heard. No one likes the person at the party only talking about themselves!
Second, learn to speak the language of business metrics early on. Social media managers are sometimes stereotyped as just 'posting content,' but you are managing the primary front door to the brand. Learn how social ties directly to revenue, pipeline, and customer retention. When you combine deep audience listening with hard data, you establish authority and secure your seat at the strategic decision-making table.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
A constant challenge is the relentless pace of algorithm changes. Platforms are constantly shifting their recommendation engines—moving away from follower count toward AI-driven interest graphs. Strategies that generated massive reach six months ago can drop off overnight if you aren't paying attention.
However, that challenge is also our biggest opportunity. Algorithm updates force us to abandon superficial hacks and focus on what actually matters: building trust & providing value that educates people and makes them want to share and save. While competitors panic over algorithmic swings, an agile social media manager uses data signals to adapt quickly, optimize for Social SEO, and double down on human-led storytelling that recommendation engines naturally love to amplify.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Driven by community, connection, and integrity, I approach social media not as a channel for broadcasting, but as a platform for meaningful relationship-building. My goal is simple: leverage social proof and transparent storytelling to cultivate deep engagement and authentic brand credibility.
Digital trends and algorithms shift constantly, which is why continuous learning drives my strategic vision. Combining a B.A. in Communications from the University of Maryland with certifications in analytics and social management tools, I turn industry shifts into proactive opportunities.
I strongly believe that brand channels provide scale, but people build trust. I empower teams and colleagues to show up confidently on social media, uniting employee advocacy with corporate strategy. By balancing ambitious strategic output with off-screen balance, I ensure long-term clarity, creativity, and impact in everything I build.
