About Katya
Katya Leonovich is a New York City–based artist, fashion designer, and owner of Leonovich Gallery, recognized for her distinctive career spanning contemporary art, couture, and creative entrepreneurship. She established Leonovich Gallery in December 2021 as a dynamic platform for both emerging and established artists, with a particular focus on supporting and showcasing women artists. Through solo and group exhibitions, workshops, and community-focused programming, the gallery provides a space for artistic discovery, experimentation, and meaningful engagement with contemporary art.
Leonovich began her creative career in fashion, receiving international training at fashion academies in Moscow and Rome, as well as a school in Paris. She developed a unique approach that combined her painting practice with couture design, presenting her work throughout Europe and at prominent New York venues, including Lincoln Center and Pier 59 in Manhattan. She continued her fashion career until 2019, when she shifted her focus exclusively to her artistic practice. Her accomplishments include receiving the Medal de Premille for Young Fashion Designers, winning first place in the Supima Cotton Competition in New York, and being recognized as Designer of the Year 2000 in Russia.
Today, Leonovich continues to advance her artistic vision through both her own creative practice and her leadership of Leonovich Gallery. She is a member of the National Association of Women Artists (NAWA) and is committed to creating greater visibility and opportunities for women artists and emerging talent. By encouraging galleries and collectors to embrace new voices, experimentation, and contemporary perspectives, she seeks to help cultivate a more innovative and inclusive art community while connecting the next generation of collectors with exceptional artists.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Katya
01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I would encourage young women entering the art industry to be bold, curious, and willing to challenge traditional approaches. I believe galleries should continue to experiment, discover emerging talent, and create opportunities for artists whose voices may not yet have been widely recognized, rather than relying repeatedly on established names. By embracing innovation, taking thoughtful risks, and remaining open to new perspectives, we can help address the challenges facing the art business while creating a more dynamic and inclusive environment for the next generation of artists.
02What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges in the art industry today is cultivating a new generation of collectors while creating greater opportunities for women artists. As many established collectors and curators from the 1980s and 1990s have stepped away from collecting, I see an important opportunity to connect with younger audiences and introduce them to contemporary art. I believe the future of the industry depends on reaching new communities of collectors, expanding access to art, and demonstrating the value and talent of women artists to the next generation.
