Her Story

About Kay

I've been in ministry for 32 years, since 1998, and it's been an incredible journey that I never anticipated. I'm a licensed and ordained minister and ordained prophet, and I host a TV show called 'Real Church Talk' that's been running since 2013. It started as an internet radio show, then became an internet television show, and was on Roku with my own channel for about 3 years before transitioning to Facebook Live. I'm also a professor teaching at Fresh Anointing Ministries Bible College and Seminary, the same place where I earned my master's degrees in biblical science and theology, plus an honorary doctorate in theology. Being asked to come back and teach as a former student was just mind-blowing to me. I'm currently enrolled in a challenging 6-month program with Dallas Theological Seminary and seeking another doctorate, hopefully starting in September. Beyond teaching, I'm a life coach with regular sessions, a chaplain, and I've written 4 books. I work at the pantry at my church for 3 hours on Wednesdays, and I only teach on Mondays for a couple hours when school is in session. My greatest thrill is being able to minister to people, to encourage, instruct, and exhort them, and to see the very trajectory of people's lives change through prayer and counsel. Ministry wasn't something I chose - it chose me. God called me through a series of fire-related incidents where I kept hearing crackling, and when I looked it up in the Bible, I discovered that 'crackling' appears just once and means 'to call.' It took me a minute to realize what was going on, but honoring that call was the very best decision I ever made. I'm not doing anything I ever wanted to do, and I'm not in any place where I ever wanted to be - it's all what God wanted for me. I'm seeing more invitations coming from all over the country to speak, and I'm going to Dallas in September for a prophetic conference. There's no retirement from ministry - you die. I'm so excited about where God is taking me.

Ten minutes with Kay

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to ignoring the opposition and following God. I know that I've heard from God, period. So I'd rather follow after God than follow after any man. It doesn't matter to me because what God orders, He pays for. If He's in it, nothing I can stand against it. That's my confidence - not in myself, but in Him who has called me. I'm saying, God, if you don't do it, it won't be done. So I'm following after you. I've always run up against opposition from men in this male-dominated field, but I ignored them. My confidence comes from knowing that God called me and that He will provide for what He orders.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

You can do anything. Ignore obstacles - they're just building blocks. Ignore naysayers. If you know in your heart and in your spirit what you're supposed to do, do that. Irrespective of opposition, do that. Irrespective of stigma, plant your feet, settle yourselves, and do that. Don't let anyone stop you from following what you know you're called to do.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge in my field is that it's a male-dominated field. Women are making their marks, but I've been in it long enough to have seen change, though not nearly the change that is needed. Just a couple years ago, when an amazing woman of God named Gina Stewart was asked to preach the opening sermon for the National Baptist Convention, it was so phenomenal that they shut the website down because people were so excited and congratulatory, but these men did not want it to be seen. I've been to some churches where I was speaking and they said I couldn't sit in the pulpit, but I could sit over to the right - which makes no sense when I'm going to preach from the pulpit. Just last week, not even a full week ago, the Southern Baptist Convention decided that their female members could not pastor, nor could they teach. Men want women under their control, and it's just not gonna work.
