Kay Timbs-Durfor is a seasoned Human Resources Director at Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation in Boone, North Carolina, bringing nearly three decades of experience in healthcare and over a decade in human resources. She began her career in emergency medicine in 1997, inspired by a mentor who recognized her ability to remain calm under pressure. Starting as an EMT and later serving as a firefighter, Kay developed a strong foundation in crisis response, safety, and patient care—skills that would later shape her unique and highly practical approach to HR leadership.

Her transition into human resources was a natural progression, driven by her deep expertise in training and safety. Over the past 11 years, Kay has specialized in healthcare education, employee training, and workplace safety, blending her clinical background with people-focused HR strategies. Known for her empathetic and nontraditional approach, she prioritizes connection, transparency, and support, helping employees navigate both professional responsibilities and personal challenges. In addition to her HR leadership, she continues to serve her community as an EMT and instructor, providing first aid and CPR training and supporting local emergency response efforts.

Beyond her professional work, Kay is deeply committed to service, creativity, and community empowerment. She volunteers regularly at local events, teaches lifesaving skills through her church, and has been recognized for both her HR contributions and her service in emergency medicine, including being named EMT of the Year. Looking ahead, she aspires to open a local artisan business that uplifts women creators by providing a platform for handmade goods and artistic expression. Through all her endeavors, Kay remains guided by values of resilience, compassion, and a strong belief in supporting others to grow and succeed.
