What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to my background in volunteer management, as well as the internal-communications expertise and initiative I bring to my role.
What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I’ve ever received came from my first boss, Ronda Maurer, whom I had the privilege of working for during the first three years of my career. From the moment I interviewed with her, I felt an immediate connection and knew I would follow her guidance wherever it led. Our bond went beyond a professional relationship, and even though our career paths have since diverged, Ronda remains an incredible inspiration. She is thoughtful, encouraging, and brings a wealth of experience, and I know she will continue to be a mentor and support system throughout my career. From Ronda, I learned some of the most practical lessons that aren’t taught in school: to speak up in meetings even when nervous, to advocate for myself, and to embrace opportunities to grow. Her guidance has been invaluable in shaping both my professional skills and my approach to leadership.
What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice to young women entering this industry is that opportunities are out there—you just have to seek them out. They don’t always fall into your lap, so it’s important to do your research and find organizations that align with your personal goals. When your work is driven by passion and purpose, you’ll not only stay motivated, but you’ll also achieve meaningful success.
I also recommend seeking out volunteer opportunities that align with your interests and aspirations. Being proactive in finding these opportunities ensures that your efforts are both impactful and personally fulfilling. By following your passion and staying committed to your mission, you’ll set yourself up to reach your goals and make a difference.
What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges in my field right now is the lasting impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, which disrupted volunteer management careers and highlighted burnout within the nonprofit sector. At the same time, inconsistent internal communications continue to be a common issue, which presents a significant opportunity to add real value by fostering clarity, engagement, and stronger connections across organizations.
What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values most important to me are community, service, and making a positive impact. My husband and I enjoy giving back through local volunteer opportunities, supporting events like the Special Olympics, and fostering retired greyhounds. I strive to bring clarity in communication and contribute meaningfully to the wellbeing of the neighborhoods and organizations I serve.
