About Kayla
Kayla Rodriguez serves on the customer experience team at Tampa Electric in Tampa, Florida, where her responsibilities include sending greeting cards to customers, boosting team morale, and planning events for customer experience representatives. A senior at Tampa Bay Technical High School, she has earned six different certifications in business principles through the school's technical program. Rodriguez is a member of Future Business Leaders of America, where she has held district and local positions, and she participated in the Project Glimmer empowerment academy. She began working at a young age in retail and later in fast food, experiences that helped her develop maturity and professional skills before joining Tampa Electric as a student worker. Rodriguez attributes her early success to starting work young, which prepared her to navigate diverse personalities and seize opportunities such as leadership roles in FBLA. She plans to attend the University of South Florida or FAMU to study international business and marketing, with the goal of continuing to build her skills at Tampa Electric or another organization.

Ten minutes with Kayla
01What do you attribute your success to?
Starting work at a young age gave me more maturity. I was dealing with people older than me and who didn't speak the same language, which helped me become open to going for opportunities like positions in FBLA early on.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
It's never too early to start. Get yourself out there, get uncomfortable, and be around people of different age groups. Start working as soon as you can, or volunteer. Try to go to a technical school or take Career and Technical Education classes to get skills early.
