With seven years of experience since high school, Kayla has managed basketball team operations, serving as a liaison between players and coaches across multiple schools. She currently works remotely with the nonprofit TF Vision, handling grant writing, research, and marketing to support their mission of restoring sight through accessible vision care. Kayla previously served as an Urban Rochester Fellow with Green Vision, where she raised over $50,000 in donations. She attributes her success to her roots as a first-generation college student and middle child of eight, drawing strength from her family. 01What do you attribute your success to?

Knowing where I come from and staying true to where I come from. I am the middle child of eight. My mom had 4 boys back to back and then 4 girls back to back. I'm first gen. I distribute a lot of my success to my parents and my siblings.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Whenever you're someone in a position of power offering you something, whether it be a vice, a lunch, or even just a paper in passing, don't be afraid to ask for more.

03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Be true to yourself, don't compromise on values, do the little things the best. Being respectful, being open-minded, open-hearted, and optimistic. Knowing when to pivot.
