Her Interview

Ten minutes with Kayla

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to strong leaders and mentors, maintaining a positive attitude, connecting with people, learning multiple roles across the plant, and making good decisions under pressure.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I ever received was to focus on the "end goal" and trust that I was capable, which gave me the confidence to move into production leadership.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering the industry is to be personable, build trust, seek out mentors, speak up, and never equate gender with weakness.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenges in the food manufacturing industry today include pandemic-related staffing pressures, operational demands, and bridging the historically siloed relationship between quality and production in a male-dominated field. At the same time, there are opportunities to strengthen cross-functional teamwork, expand cross-training, and develop leaders who are ready to grow within the industry.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values most important to me are balance, curiosity, and connection. I am blessed to work for a company that understands work-life balance. I can make time to spend with my family, which involves following my two boys in all of their sports and school activities. Our family also enjoys going on adventures like traveling, camping, fishing, and visiting the zoo. When I ask my boys what their favorite things to do at home are, they respond by saying, "We like hanging out on the couch, watching movies with you, and caring for our two cats."
