Her Story

About Kayla Kaishel

I started my career in retail, working at Starbucks, then Nike, and then Apple, where I moved into operations. Through these roles, I really understood what people need and how people deal with products, which got me interested in this field. When the pandemic happened, I transitioned from retail to tech, joining Indeed as a customer success manager. In that role, I had to really understand the needs of my clients and learn how to problem solve, which is something I'm naturally good at. I wanted to understand who I was speaking with, what they needed, and how I could connect them and bridge them to the products they need for them to be successful. I always say that I think other people's success is my success as well. After Indeed, I went back to school and decided to invest in my own education. I just graduated with my master's degree in business marketing from FIU. Now I want to go full-on into business marketing, being an official product marketing manager, where I can be the sole owner or work with a team, be in charge of messaging and understanding what people need with the products and making sure that they're connected with them, whether that's business-to-business or business-to-customer. I just want to make sure that everyone is involved and is bridged with what they need, and that products can go out to the right people.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to my ability to be audacious. I try everything, and I'm not really afraid to go after things that I'm afraid of, even if I'm not 100% sure I can do it. I have the confidence to believe that I can figure it out. Every role I've been into, I didn't have experience before then, but when I get into a role, I want to be the best at that role. I really think that just the confidence that I have to know that as long as I'm learning and applying the information as soon as possible, I can get everything done.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

The first thing I would say is it's okay not to know where you're going, as long as you keep putting one foot in front of the other and you're moving towards what feels right to you. It's okay to change your mind as well. If you go in one direction and you've hit your peak, or you've hit your breaking point, or you just feel like this isn't what I want to do anymore, do not be afraid to start over. Also, wherever you go, just know that it's leading you to where you're meant to be, even if it's not what you envisioned, or even if it is what you envisioned, sometimes it's even bigger than what you can be. To any young girl out there, you're young, it's okay not to know, just keep going. The best is yet to come.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest opportunity for me is honestly the use of AI. It's not only going to allow us to do our work a lot faster, because at the end of the day, when it comes to marketing, speed is everything. We want to get results as fast as possible, but as efficient as possible. Being involved, being aware, being educated on how to get our clients the things that they need faster is literally the best thing, that's the best opportunity. The biggest challenge is collaboration. I feel like marketers should work more in team settings and more together, because marketing is a lot, there's a lot to go into it. Being able to connect with different people and figure out what our strengths are and be able to come together so that we can get tasks and jobs done would be a really great opportunity, but it could be a bit of a challenge sometimes when you feel like you're doing it all alone.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

My three biggest values are family and loyalty, authenticity, and connection. Family, whether that's blood or chosen family, creates who you are and gives you that foundation. Authenticity is really important to me because I feel like everyone has their own uniqueness, and I really want everyone to own who they are. I know it's so easy for us to be influenced by other people, but there is a voice that everyone has, and there's a uniqueness and a glow and a brightness to everyone. I feel like everyone should express that, even though I know some people can be shy about it. Connection, or community, is important because even without family, connection between two people or between groups of people is really how we have that human connection. Community happens through human connection, so building community, creating safe spaces, having impactful conversations - I love to talk to people and just help people feel like they're not alone. I feel like that's really important, always staying connected and having that sense of community.
