Her Story

About Kayleigh

My journey into nonprofit work began with a mission trip I took with my church when I was in high school. Seeing the transformative impact that this type of work can have on communities struggling in poverty inspired me to make it my career path. I started working at Compassion in 2018, even before I graduated, and have been there ever since. Throughout my time, I've worked across different areas, starting on an innovation team, then building out a global marketing team that supports our fundraising offices around the world, followed by direct fundraising work on our USA marketing team. Now I'm back on the innovation team, working on the technology side as a product manager for Compassion Causes, our crowdfunding platform at CompassionCauses.com. In this role, I own the website and donor experience, building out new features for how people give and fundraise, and helping plan our global expansion into other markets. I work with design teams to create the designs and with developers who do the actual building work, overseeing what we're building and when. One of my proudest accomplishments was helping launch the Compassion Experience last year, a mobile immersive experience that tours the country and helps people see what life is like in poverty. We built it in just six months, and I'm proud of being able to rally the team to get it on the road so quickly and of the ongoing impact it has on people who go through it. What I love most about my work is getting to take ideas and turn them into reality. I can learn from our users or the people we're serving, understand what their needs are, and then build solutions and bring them all the way to life. Seeing something go from an idea to something real in the world is the most rewarding part of my career.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I think just being brave enough to put yourself out there. A lot of the opportunities that I've had are because of the connections I made, and that just started with reaching out to leaders that I admired and asking them to get coffee or have a conversation. That network has really opened a lot of opportunities for me. I think within that, too, not being afraid to share your ideas and your dreams for the future. I just think those types of connections can unlock doors that you could never even see in my experience. So, being brave enough to put yourself out there and say what you want can make a huge impact in your life.
