About Kaylie
Kaylie Hamlet owns and operates Mermaid Lagoon Spray Tanning and Pampering in Long, Texas. She entered the beauty industry in 2013 after realizing, while pregnant with her fourth child, that she needed to build a career to support her family of four. Despite having barely graduated high school, Hamlet earned certifications in regular spray tanning, bodybuilding spray tanning, and teeth whitening. Her work focuses on helping women feel confident in their bodies and on building a brand from nothing. She values confidentiality, trust, punctuality, and loyalty in both her professional and personal life. Hamlet credits community support for driving her forward and appreciates the flexibility of self-employment, which allows her to attend her children's school and sporting events. She advises young women entering the industry to pursue what they want regardless of others' opinions, noting that what-ifs do not matter.

01What do you attribute your success to?
My success is due to my fourth child. I was a stay-at-home mom up until I got pregnant with her and realized real quickly that if I was gonna be a mom of four, I probably needed to do something with my life in order to help support them.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
I honestly don't think I've ever gotten any really good career advice. The support of my community has been the only thing that's driven me to keep doing what I'm doing.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
No matter what anyone says, if it's what you want to do, do it. What ifs do not matter.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The biggest challenge right now is the economy. People are budgeting and cutting things like spray tans first, though they keep their hair done. The opportunities are getting to make my own schedule and be present for every single aspect of my kids' lives, like school events and sporting events.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Confidentiality, trust, being on time, and loyalty.
