Ten minutes with Keeanna
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to the life experiences, both difficult and meaningful, that have shaped my perspective as a therapist. Losing my parents early in life and witnessing the impact of addiction within my family deepened my empathy and strengthened my ability to connect with others. These experiences allow me to meet clients with authenticity and understanding, bridging clinical expertise with real-life insight. When clients feel genuinely seen and understood, meaningful healing becomes possible.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
One of the best pieces of career advice I ever received came from a graduate school professor who said, “People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.”
As a mental health therapist, I live by this principle. Many of my clients, some of whom are court-mandated, are not always seeking therapy by choice. Building rapport and helping them feel seen, safe, and understood is essential. Before diagnosing or intervening, it’s important that clients know who I am, trust my intentions, and understand that my work is driven by genuine care and passion.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice to young women entering this field is to pursue it only if you have a genuine passion for helping others grow, heal, and learn, not for financial gain. Mental health work must be driven by purpose and compassion, because that is what every client deserves. While the work is challenging and emotionally demanding, it is also deeply rewarding and fulfilling. Walking alongside others on their healing journeys is both a humbling and an incredible privilege.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges in the mental health field right now is the growing demand for services coupled with a shortage of accessible providers. Many communities, especially rural and underserved areas, lack adequate mental health resources, which can lead to long wait times and limited support for those in need. Additionally, stigma around mental health still persists, making it harder for some individuals to seek help early.
At the same time, there are significant opportunities on the horizon. The increasing awareness of mental health’s importance has sparked growth in innovative treatment approaches, teletherapy options, and community-based support models. There is also more emphasis on integrating mental health care into overall health systems and reducing barriers to access.
Ultimately, while the need for mental health services continues to rise, the field has the opportunity to evolve in ways that make care more accessible, personalized, and equitable for everyone.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Work–life balance is one of the most important values in both my professional and personal life, especially as a licensed professional and a mother. I believe that maintaining balance allows me to show up fully present, grounded, and effective for my clients and my family. I also deeply value autonomy and being trusted in my expertise to use my clinical judgment and experience to do what is ethically sound and truly in the best interest of those I serve. When trust, balance, and purpose align, I’m able to provide the highest quality care while honoring my own well-being.
