Her Interview

Ten minutes with Keianna

01What do you attribute your success to?

My drive comes from always wanting to be a doctor since I was a young girl. The route wasn't med school at first, I wanted to be a pharmacist too, but ultimately my goal was to become a doctor. I tried different routes and wanted to achieve all the degrees along the way, like bachelor's and master's, in case something fell off with the PhD program.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Everyone tells me to keep going, keep going, just don't stop, just keep going. Like, you're doing good, it seems like it's a lot, but keep going.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Make sure it's something that you actually want to do. Set long-term goals, because if this is somewhere that you probably may not want to be there, you may think that that's what you want to do, and eventually you may branch off somewhere else. Use that if you have to as a placeholder, because you can make connections there as well, and just use it as a learning experience.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Challenges would be basically my schedule, trying to excel on my own, so being a full-time PhD student, working full-time with a tutoring business, and then I have a child, so a lot.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Family.
