Her Story

About Keisha

I started my career in media 20 years ago, and it's been an incredible journey. Growing up in LA, I was always the person hosting all the high school rallies, and that naturally led me into radio. I had a college radio show at Long Beach City College that kind of blew up in the area, and when my class took a field trip to 93.5K Day in LA, I had my resume in my back pocket. The rapper Nas was there that day and invited us to his album release party, and the promotion director offered me an internship interview the next day because I was the only one who brought a resume. That internship turned into me being the receptionist at the radio station, and then a consultant came in one day and said I had a great voice and asked if I wanted to be on the radio. He put me on air on weekends, so during the week I was a receptionist, and on weekends I was on the radio. I did everything from the front desk - HR assistant, sales assistant, receptionist - for 4 years. Then I moved to Kentucky for my first real full-time on-air position where I stayed for 4.5 years, then went to Indianapolis for 2 years, and finally came to Houston where I've been for 9 years. I did 2 years doing middays, then led the morning show for 5 years, which was a huge achievement because there aren't many female leads in radio, especially in our company. I became the voice of Houston during that time. Now my own Keisha Nicole show is expanding throughout our company - I'm in several markets including Houston, Indianapolis, and I'm the voice of our Atlanta and Cleveland stations. I've also hosted for the Houston Texans NFL team for 2 years, and I'm currently hosting the FIFA World Cup here in Houston. My typical day involves getting to the station early to start my Indianapolis show, then doing my local Houston show on 97.9 the Box live while recording for Indianapolis and sending it to them. I have tons of commercials and endorsements, and I'm constantly recording voice and imaging scripts for our Atlanta station. God gave me the gift of using my voice, and I use it for good - you'll never hear negativity come out of me, and I mentor so many young women in this industry.

01What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I ever received was from DJ Kly, who was on the radio in LA on the Beat. When I reached out to her during my MySpace days saying I wanted to do this, she told me to save my money because radio doesn't pay for the first 15 years. And she was right - by the first 10 years, I was flat broke. I had my car repossessed, my lights cut off more times than I can even tell you. Did I take her advice? I can't say I did, because I didn't have any money to save, but it would have been good advice to follow. She said save your money because radio doesn't pay for real unless you get to the big league.
