I’m a communication strategist and the founder of Speak Up! Stand Tall!, a platform I launched after serving as Press Secretary for the City of Newport News.

That role changed how I see communication. It put me in moments where the stakes were real—where what was said, and how it was said, could shape trust, leadership, and outcomes in real time.

That’s where I started to notice something.

Most people don’t struggle with what to say.

They struggle with what happens right before they say it.

Pressure. Doubt. Fear.

My work is centered on that moment.

Through Speak Up! Stand Tall!, I help people become clear and grounded in those situations so they don’t hold back when it matters most. It’s not about speaking louder or performing confidence—it’s about being steady enough to communicate with intention.

I work across storytelling, presence, and emotional intelligence, because communication is not just about words. It’s about how people think, respond, and carry themselves when the moment gets difficult.

My work includes partnerships with organizations and community spaces, and I also bring this into schools, where I teach young people how to express themselves with confidence—often for the first time.

My background in journalism and psychology shaped how I understand people and decision-making. And being a mother has deeply influenced how I lead and how I see the responsibility that comes with having a voice.

I don’t believe confidence is something you either have or don’t have. I believe it’s something you learn to carry.

Q

What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to resilience and my ability to keep showing up, even when things were not easy.

I’ve found myself in challenging moments—professionally and personally—and those are the moments that taught me how to stay grounded, think clearly, and keep moving forward.

My background in journalism and psychology also shaped how I understand people, communication, and decision-making. And being a mother has been one of the biggest influences in how I lead and how I see the world.

My faith has always been a source of strength, and I’ve been influenced by people who challenge me to think deeper and hold myself to a higher standard—not just in what I say, but in how I show up.

At the core, I believe success comes from learning how to stand back up without losing your voice.

Q

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

One of the best pieces of advice I received came from my father, who was a journalist. He told me, “Never rush to speak,” and often reminded me of the proverb, “The word is silver, but silence is gold.”

That stayed with me.

It changed how I approach communication. I learned that presence is not about saying more—it’s about knowing when to speak and being grounded enough to mean it.

Q

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would tell them that your biggest challenge won’t be learning how to speak.

Many people stay away from this field because they think they’re not articulate enough, but that’s usually not the real issue.

The real challenge is learning how to hold your voice when there is pressure to shrink.

This industry can be fast, political, and sometimes intimidating. There will be moments where you know exactly what to say, but you hesitate—that’s what you need to learn how to manage.

Build your skills, of course, but also build your ability to stay grounded in those moments. That’s what will set you apart.

And don’t try to sound like everyone else in the room.

The people who stand out are not the loudest—they’re the clearest and the most grounded.

When you learn how to stay steady and speak with intention, that’s when you begin to shine.

Q

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges right now is that communication has become faster, but not necessarily clearer.

There is a lot of pressure to respond quickly, especially in public-facing roles, and that often leads to reactive decisions instead of thoughtful ones.

At the same time, there is a growing gap in how leaders handle pressure. Many know what to say in theory, but struggle in real moments—when scrutiny, emotions, and internal dynamics come into play.

The opportunity is that organizations are starting to recognize that communication is not just messaging—it’s leadership.

There is a real need for people who can help leaders stay grounded, communicate with clarity, and navigate difficult moments without losing trust.

At the end of the day, information is everywhere—but clarity is rare.

That’s where the real value is right now.

Q

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that matter most to me are integrity, clarity, and responsibility.

In my work, that means being honest in how I communicate, even when it’s not the easiest path, and making sure that what I say truly aligns with what’s happening. I also value emotional intelligence—understanding how people think and feel, and being intentional about how communication affects them.

In my personal life, I value presence and resilience. Being present with my children, showing up fully, and continuing to move forward, even through difficult moments, has shaped how I approach everything else.

For me, it’s important that how I live and how I work are aligned.
