Her Story

About Kelli

I've been in the beauty marketing industry for around 10 years. I started as a licensed esthetician, but I realized I couldn't work in a spa full-time because it felt boring to me and I needed something more creative. I had already been doing social media management for a lot of the salons and spas that I either worked at or that were local in the area, so I just kind of started to bridge that beauty experience with marketing experience, and from there it just evolved. Most of my experience is in corporate America, but in the last year and a half I've been out on my own freelancing for clients. I work fully remote, and a typical day for me starts with my two kids who are [AGE] and [AGE], getting them ready and out the door for school. From there, I work through priorities for clients each day. I like to stay really organized, so I've created an AI system for myself to make sure I'm staying on track with everything. Then it's a lot of marketing strategy work, creative deliverables for clients, and checking in on social media accounts. What I'm most proud of is at my last company, I played a huge role in building a professional hair care and color brand from the ground up called Arete. It wasn't my brand, but it was built in-house, and with our very lean marketing team, it really took off. It's a multi-million dollar brand now, and I really focused on building the influencer and affiliate program that drove a lot of revenue.

Ten minutes with Kelli

01What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

I think that specifically for women, a lot of the times we're made to feel like we don't have a seat at the table, and so I think that one of the good things that I've heard is just remembering that you deserve to be there, you deserve a seat at the table. And so, just having that confidence in a room full of people has definitely got me pretty far in a short amount of time.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would say don't pigeonhole yourself into one area of marketing. While, yes, it's great to have one standout skill, whether that's like paid media or copywriting, things like that, I would say learn as much as you can, because I've seen people kind of go like, oh, well, I only do this, but I think that people on marketing teams can realize that there's plenty of times that you kind of have to wear all of the hats and jump in where you can. And so if you have a wider skill set, then that definitely, I think, helps you have more opportunities.

03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Honesty is number one for me. I'm not one for like beating around the bush in corporate, like secondhand lingo. I think that being honest with people, both in my personal and professional life, is just always the best course of action. And I think that being patient and thoughtful could be a value. Those kind of go hand-in-hand, and just making sure that I can always kind of see it from the other person's angle, and that I've gotten good at listening to others and being patient. I used to be very like go, go, go, in the sense of like I felt like everyone needed to work as fast as me and work as hard as me, and I think now that kind of patience allows me to realize, allows me to meet people where they're at. I definitely value relationships. I value relationships, and I think that that is important in both business and personal. A lot of times I'm busy and don't prioritize those kinds of things in my personal life, so I try to pay attention to it. And then I guess integrity kind of goes with honesty, but just kind of showing up the way that you think you're, or you say you're going to show up, and not only for yourself but for other people. And especially in a freelance situation or an agency situation, it is important to deliver on promises that you made, because when you're working with a boutique agency, it's kind of taking a risk for your business, and so just having the integrity to show up and do the best you can, and that kind of also works into me being a mom and just trying to always, you know, be better than the day before.
