Her Story

About Kelly

Kelly Holmes serves as Senior Associate with Infection Prevention and Management Associates, an infection prevention consulting company, a role she has held since 2004. She earned her master's degree in epidemiology while working in cancer research at MD Anderson in the immunology department before transitioning into infection prevention, which she describes as her dream job. In her current position, Holmes focuses on building training competency programs for infection preventionists at various career stages, developing content for certification preparation, and creating modules on topics such as influencing without authority and regulatory reporting requirements. Her research interests center on surveillance competency, healthcare quality measurement, and the responsible use of artificial intelligence in healthcare. Holmes is actively involved with the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC), serving on the National Professional Development Committee in her third and final year and co-hosting APIC's 5-Second Rule Podcast in her fourth year. She recently obtained her Advanced Leadership certification, for which she was among the first in her cohort, and achieved her CAPIC fellowship based on publications and national presentations. Holmes began her PhD program two years ago and anticipates completing it by the end of 2027 while continuing to work full time.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I want them to believe in themselves. Find a mentor that they admire and model their behavior after that. It's okay to make mistakes - we do the best that we can until we know better, and then we do better. Reflect on what went wrong and then do better the next time.
