Her Story
About Kelly
Kelly Supernaw owns a gift shop in Camden, New York. She has owned her company for 26 years after working for the previous owner for five years; her parents purchased the business as a birthday gift. Supernaw went to school for interior design. The shop, located in farm country, focuses on primitive country and antique items that appeal to local customers. She creates a variety of custom items herself, including jewelry, goat's milk soap, painted glassware, and painted furniture. The business won a grant that helped acquire machinery for embroidery. Supernaw attributes her success to imagination and the ability to repurpose items creatively, such as using chicken crates as tables, turning boards into bookshelves, and hanging branches with lights from the ceiling because branches are free. She advises young women entering the industry that success takes time and requires the willingness to change and adapt.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Kelly
01What do you attribute your success to?
Imagination and being able to take something and do something totally different with it. Thinking outside the box, like using chicken crates as tables or turning boards into bookshelves. Using what you have in different ways, such as branches with lights on the ceiling because branches are free.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
You're not gonna get rich quickly. It's gonna take a long time. You might try one thing and it might not work, so don't be afraid to change. You have to be able to change in today's world.
