Her Story

About Kelly

Kelly Sutton, MHL, BSN, RN, CCDS, CCS, ACDIS Approved Educator, serves as Director of Education Services at Hivero in Winter Haven, Florida, where she leads the development and management of Hivero Learning and the Expert Network. With more than 30 years of experience in healthcare, Sutton has established herself as a respected leader in clinical education, Clinical Documentation Integrity (CDI), and healthcare transformation. Her career began through the Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) program in high school, which sparked her passion for healthcare and led her to earn her Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) certification shortly after graduation, before advancing her education to become a registered nurse. She spent more than 13 years in emergency medicine, gaining extensive clinical experience before moving into leadership roles in Employee Occupational Health, Workers’ Compensation, and stroke program coordination. Sutton’s career reflects a strong commitment to improving healthcare quality, developing teams, and driving meaningful change. As a stroke program leader, she successfully improved patient care processes by reducing door-to-needle times from 90 minutes to 13 minutes through effective collaboration among multidisciplinary teams. She later transitioned into Clinical Documentation Integrity, where she progressed from a frontline CDI specialist to leadership roles focused on education and implementation. At AdventHealth, she served as a Regional CDI Educator supporting 11 facilities and later as a System CDI Educator and Implementation Specialist supporting more than 44 facilities. She continued to expand her impact as a CDI Education Specialist and subject-matter expert with the Association of Clinical Documentation Integrity Specialists (ACDIS), where she developed and delivered educational programs, supported professional growth, and contributed to advancing CDI practices across the healthcare industry. In her current role at Hivero, Sutton is building an innovative education academy designed to provide engaging, interactive learning experiences that strengthen critical thinking, knowledge application, and professional development for CDI professionals. She holds a Master’s in Health Leadership and a Bachelor’s in Nursing Science from Western Governors University and maintains several professional credentials, including Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Certified Clinical Documentation Specialist (CCDS), ACDIS Approved Educator, and Prosci® Certified Change Practitioner. An active member of ACDIS, the Florida Chapter of the Association of Clinical Documentation Integrity Specialists (FLACIDS), the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), and the United States Distance Learning Association (USDLA), Sutton is recognized for her expertise in healthcare education, leadership, and mentorship. She attributes her success to perseverance and her grandmother's encouragement, which instilled in her the confidence to pursue her goals. Guided by the values of honesty, integrity, and transparency, Sutton continues to inspire others through her commitment to lifelong learning, professional growth, and excellence in healthcare.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Kelly

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to perseverance, resilience, and the belief that I am capable of achieving my goals. I was fortunate to have a deeply supportive grandmother who helped raise me and instilled in me from an early age the confidence to pursue anything I set my mind to. Her encouragement shaped my mindset, taught me to believe in myself, and gave me the determination to overcome challenges and continue moving forward.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I have ever received is to never stop learning and to take ownership of my personal and professional growth. While on-the-job training is invaluable, continuous learning outside of daily responsibilities is what helps build expertise, adaptability, and confidence. I believe staying curious, seeking new knowledge, and continuously developing my skills are essential to long-term success.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

The advice I would give to young women entering my industry is to never stop learning and to take ownership of their personal and professional development. The one thing that can never be taken away from you is your education and knowledge. While jobs and opportunities may change, the skills, expertise, degrees, and certifications you earn will always stay with you. I encourage women to continue expanding their knowledge, pursue additional education and certifications, and remain committed to growth. By continuously learning and pushing forward, you will create opportunities and never limit yourself from achieving the career you desire.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge in CDI (Clinical Documentation Integrity) is that entering the field can be difficult. Many organizations hire registered nurses from within, and because CDI is a highly specialized area, it comes with a steep learning curve. However, once you establish yourself in the field, there are tremendous opportunities for growth. CDI professionals can pursue roles in frontline operations, leadership, or education, or explore entrepreneurship by starting their own consulting firms. The field offers a wide range of possibilities for those willing to invest in developing the necessary expertise.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that are most important to me in both my work and personal life are honesty, integrity, and transparency. I believe in living with authenticity and being as honest as possible in every situation. I strive to approach challenges with courage, embrace hard work, and maintain the highest level of integrity, regardless of whether anyone is watching. These values guide my decisions, shape my relationships, and influence the way I show up each day.
