Her Story
About Kelly
I was teaching science in middle school for several years, and during that time I designed programs for my students where we would call in scientists from around the country. I just felt so inspired by the actual scientists that we were meeting that I decided to go on and get my master's degree because I really wanted to be in the field doing the scientific work. Even though I really enjoy teaching, I always really appreciated teachers who had hands-on experience, who had worked in their field and then come back and taught. That's kind of my goal - to get out in the field, do my own scientific work, and then hopefully retire back into teaching again. I put my education on hold to have kids and stay home and be a mom, and going back to get a master's degree when lots of people my age already have their career figured out meant I had to do that in a bit of reverse order. Now I work in the environmental department at Westwood Professional Services, where I'm often the first part of any project, researching land use and investigating how the land has been used over time to make sure it's safe for development. I usually work on wind and solar projects, developing solar and wind energy in the areas we're developing.

Ten minutes with Kelly
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to just wanting to keep growing. I think that I'm just excited by learning, and so in all ways, I want to learn what my body can do running 100 miles on a trail, I want to learn what my mind can do in front of a computer, I want to learn what that next class is going to teach me, or what my boss (who is a woman and is fantastic) is going to teach me. I think it's just this motivation to learn, and I'm not afraid to fail, because that's just part of learning anyway.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I guess it's never too late to get started. I put my education on hold to have kids and stay home and be a mom, and going back to get a master's degree when lots of people my age already have their career figured out can seem kind of hard, because everybody there is younger. I had to kind of do that in a bit of reverse order. I just kept telling myself, this year is gonna go by, and at the end of it, I'm either going to be one step closer to my goal, or I'm just gonna still be in the same spot. So, why not move towards my goals? Culturally, it can be hard, because people are looking at you like you're this older person coming into this young person field, but get over it.
