With more than 40 years of experience in radio, she began her career at just 19 years old at the number one radio station in Corpus Christi, where she initially worked in morning radio before expanding into promotions and marketing. Over time, she rose to become Promotions Director, a role she held for more than 25 years, building a strong foundation in audience engagement, station operations, and community-focused broadcasting.

Throughout her career, Kelly has demonstrated a deep commitment to understanding every aspect of the media industry, from on-air performance to behind-the-scenes operations, marketing strategy, and leadership. After decades in radio, she briefly transitioned into nonprofit and community-focused work, including roles with the Texas State Aquarium and Massage Heights’ nonprofit initiatives, where she supported programs assisting individuals facing financial and personal hardship. She also gained experience in artist management and other creative ventures, further broadening her leadership and communications expertise before returning to radio to help revitalize struggling stations in Corpus Christi.

In addition to her broadcasting leadership, Kelly is widely recognized for her contributions to youth education and community development. She created the first-ever educational program approved by the Better Business Bureau in its 105-year history, focused on “Ethics in Action” and teaching young people about digital responsibility, cyberbullying prevention, and ethical behavior. A longtime Girl Scout troop leader, she has also dedicated years to mentoring young women and supporting youth development. Today, Kelly continues to champion the importance of local radio as a trusted community resource, particularly during emergencies, while also serving as an on-air host and advocating for integrity, resilience, and lifelong learning.

Q

What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to perseverance, a strong belief in myself, and a commitment to education as a stabilizing foundation throughout my life. I have consistently pushed forward even when circumstances changed, refusing to give up and instead adapting and continuing to pursue growth and opportunity.

Q

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I’ve received comes from both family and mentors who shaped my values and leadership style. My mother instilled in me a strong belief in my potential and the importance of pursuing a meaningful path, while my late aunts taught me to stay kind, grounded, and true to myself, always treating others with compassion and giving back when possible. Professionally, my mentor Carrie Hurt, former CEO of the Better Business Bureau, showed me how to lead with both strength and empathy—balancing accountability with care, truly listening to people, and creating a culture where performance and humanity can coexist.

Q

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering the radio industry is to trust your inner drive and pursue what genuinely excites you, even when the path feels competitive or uncertain. Stay curious and committed to learning—ask questions, understand how things work behind the scenes, and take the initiative to build knowledge across different areas of the industry rather than limiting yourself to one role. Success in this field requires preparation, consistency, and a strong work ethic, so invest fully in mastering your craft and showing up with excellence. When you earn opportunities, make sure you are not only present but actively contributing, growing, and continuing to build the confidence and capability to sustain your place.

Q

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges in my field has been navigating a competitive, traditionally male-dominated industry where women often have to work harder to prove their capabilities and leadership potential. Early in my career, I also learned how easy it can be for outside opinions, doubt, or industry barriers to discourage people from pursuing what they truly feel called to do. However, I see these challenges as opportunities to build resilience, stay focused on purpose, and grow through persistence and adaptability. Today, I encourage others—especially women—to trust their instincts, remain committed to their vision, and recognize that challenges are not setbacks but chances to strengthen their path and expand what is possible.

Q

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Integrity is one of my most important values, both personally and professionally. I place a high priority on honesty, accountability, and following through on my commitments, because I believe trust is the foundation of every meaningful relationship and interaction. I also value kindness and empathy, striving to treat others with respect and compassion in all that I do. These principles guide my leadership style and the way I connect with colleagues, my community, and the people I mentor, shaping how I lead, serve, and show up every day.
