Her Interview

Ten minutes with Kelly Van

01What do you attribute your success to?

I've always put learning and education as a priority since elementary school. It was ingrained in me as a kid to set small goals and work towards them with effort. I apply this to my physical health too, staying active. I reflect thoughtfully on what I want out of life and put in the work to achieve goals, whether looking for jobs or pursuing education.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

My grandfather said to make your hobby your career. Not always practical for everyone, but for me it means enveloping what you're good at and your hobbies into your work, like helping people and being outdoors. Find ways to look at what you're good at and make it part of your career.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Recruiting students who truly want to commit to the 4-year program and understand the requirements before entering. Many students drop out after realizing it's not for them academically or personally. We lose students from classes of 100 down to 85-90. Need to ensure students know what the program entails and are ready to put in the work.
