Her Story

About Kelsey

My main area of expertise is small group teaching and helping other teachers drive that in their own classrooms. As the lead science teacher for my campus, I focus on filling gaps for students, especially since fifth grade is the first time they're tested. On a typical day, I set up our elementary school lab, check and track what we have available for other grade levels, and teach 64 students a day through rotations. Once a week, I help lead our team in planning discussions to make sure our plans fit together as we move forward, since we're a transdisciplinary campus. At the end of the day, I'm on bus duty where I love all the kids and tell them bye. My most notable achievement was being nominated for Teacher of the Year my first year teaching, which helped me feel like I was headed in the right direction.

Ten minutes with Kelsey

01What do you attribute your success to?

I would have to say, God first. My husband and kids are my main supporters, and then just being able to put in the hard work and the time, remembering that overcoming obstacles happen. You know, if I didn't have God and my family, I wouldn't be where I am today, 100%.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best advice I've ever received is kind of two things that go hand in hand. When things come up, when anything in life comes up, take it as it comes, just one step at a time. Because if you look too far in the future, you might get overwhelmed, but if you stay stuck where you are, you can't move forward.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Don't be afraid to step into a new role with others looking at you. Just remember what you can provide and what you can receive. If you're stepping into a new field, then there's a lot to learn, but you have a lot to provide at the same time. Just because you're new doesn't mean that you can't provide a great source of information.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

I think it would have to be finding new ways to keep students engaged, and helping not only myself, but other educators stay focused on the goals of education. You know, why are we in education, what is the end goal? And it's not just to pass them on to the next grade level. What are we looking for? What are we doing to reach these kids where they are, and what do they need?

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

I'd have to say trustworthiness, being accountable and holding people accountable, as well as allowing others to hold myself accountable. Being honest, and being able to be a leader while also having that ability to lead but also being able to learn along the way.
