Keri A. Melendez

Markowitz Ringel Trusty & Hartog
Miami, FL 33156

With nearly 20 years in law firm administration, I began my career at the Florida Bar Association in Miami, working directly with the Chief Bar Counsel. I have since built a career leading law firm operations, overseeing accounting, trust management, human resources, payroll, billing, vendor relations, and strategic growth initiatives. My focus is driving operational efficiency, profitability, and long-term firm performance. Throughout my career, I have successfully increased firm revenue through strong operational leadership and process improvement. I pursued this field recognizing the opportunity to excel in a challenging, traditionally male-dominated industry and was determined to lead within it.

Q

What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to hard work, consistency, and genuinely caring about the firms I work for. I’ve always been hands on, detail-oriented, and willing to do whatever it takes to keep operations running smoothly and efficiently. I also think being able to build strong relationships, solve problems quickly, and adapt in a fast-paced environment has played a big part in my growth and success.

Q

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I’ve ever received was to always understand the business side of whatever role you’re in, not just your own responsibilities. Once you see how everything connects, people, operations, and finances, you’re able to make better decisions and really add value beyond your title.

Q

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Learn the business, not just your job. The more you understand how a firm actually runs, finances, operations, and people, the more valuable you become. Don’t be afraid to take up space or speak up when something doesn’t make sense. Confidence builds with experience, not the other way around. And stay consistent. This is a field where reliability and follow through matter just as much as skill.

Q

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge right now is how fast the legal industry is changing. Clients expect more, budgets are tighter, and firms are being pushed to do more with less. At the same time, technology is changing how everything operates, so you have to stay on top of it and be willing to adjust quickly. But it’s also a big opportunity. Firms that are open to improving processes and using new tools are the ones that are going to grow and stay competitive.

Q

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Integrity, accountability, and consistency are what guide me in my work. I believe in doing things the right way, taking ownership, and following through. I also value respect and clear communication, and I focus on building trust in every relationship. My faith in God is an important part of my life and the way I make decisions, both personally and professionally. Outside of work, my husband Jovanny and our five children are my biggest priority and motivation.
